Why I built 7fish

A thousand-day streak. Zero real conversations.

After a 1,000-day streak learning Chinese, I realized I didn't really know Chinese. I could say things like "I like cats and dogs," but nothing of real substance. If I heard someone speaking Chinese, there was exactly a 0% chance I'd understand them.

Then I found comprehensible input, Stephen Krashen's idea that you learn a language by taking in lots of material that's just slightly above your level. I went looking for Chinese content and three things became painfully clear:

    Reading in another language is exhausting.

    Every sentence is a puzzle. Most people give up after a page.

    Interest is rocket fuel.

    Studying gets easier when the story is about something you actually care about.

  3. 3

    Content that's both at your level and interesting is almost impossible to find.

    Children's books are too simple. News articles are too hard. Nothing is about you.

I tried stitching it together with ChatGPT. Too clunky, too much overhead. So I built the tool I wished existed.
